Analysis of a music video; Two Door Cinema Club- Something good can work

Two Door Cinema Club // Something good can work

Camera shots

They use close ups in this video to capture all of the bands facial expressions whilst they are singing. It uses a lot of wide shots, as they show us the band singing and playing their instruments whilst also letting us see the setting they are in. So allowing us to see all of the background too. They use cut-ins which are showing us them playing their instruments in detail, so we can see their hands physically playing the guitars. It includes the weather shot too, so we can see what kind of day it is, in this video its sunny and happy type of weather which links in with what kind of song they are singing. Another shot they do is a point of view shot, as parts of the camera is when they are walking and its from their point of view so we can see what they can see and it kind of lets us feel how they do at that point.

Camera movements

The camera movements they use in this music video is a hand held movement, at the begging when they are jumping into the pool we can see that somehow the camera is attached to their body and sometimes they are holding it themselves, so we its a hand held movement. They also use a follow movement, as there is one part where they are walking and the camera is capturing their feet following them as they walk down the street. They also use a tilt movement quite frequently, as they have the camera on a high tilt, looking downwards on them, so we can see them head and then below them, it shows us a lot in a unique way. They also show one of the men pushing the camera making it spin really fast which then leads to merging into another scene.

Editing

The editing they have used in this music video are jump cuts, this is when it constantly throughout the video, jumps from the setting and what's happening to then the band and them singing. The pace of the editing is matched perfectly with the beat of the music, for example, in this video when a fast beat happens at the end of the verses, the camera moves with the incredible fast beat that you can hardly see what's going on, yet it matched very nicely with the music.

Sound

This video also uses sound dubbing, where they shoot all of the clips and then add the music to the different clips they videoed. The band are also lip syncing in this video. The video is just the music and vocals, which is what most videos include. This also includes diegetic sounds, by when he jumps in the water, you here the sound of the water.

Lighting

This video, the lighting that is used throughout the music video is natural lighting as all of it is shot outside, so they didn't have to use any artificial lighting. The day they shot their video was mainly sunny so this lets the sunlight shine on their face so we can still see them clearly it just so happens to be natural lighting.

Props

The main props they use in this music video is the bands instruments, as when they are walking we can tell that the camera is attached to the guitar, so it gives a good view of the guitar. Other props that they use the most are the the micro phone that he sings in. But other than that its just the instruments that we see in this music video.

Costumes

The costumes they wear in this music video are the clothes that they would wear on a day to day basis, this shows they are being themselves. The clothes are natural colours which shows they are an alternatives genre which links to what genre their music is.

Analysis of a music video; Linkin Park // Numb

Linkin Park // Numb

Camera shots

They use a lot of close ups on the bands face when they are singing in this music video, so they can see the emotions that the singers are feeling, in this video, it shows him closing eyes whilst singing, this shows how into the song he is and that his very passionate about what he is singing. It also allows us to see that he is lip-syncing to the words. It also uses ling shots on the whole band so we can see the background in where they are singing and gives us the setting. We also then can see how they are set out, the band who are playing instruments are all stood around the main singer.

Camera movements

In this music video it uses a lot of panning, not only on the band, but in the actual video that's telling the story, it follows the band around the room without cutting but also shows us panning on the character in the music video. It involves tilts on the people playing the instruments, so we can see not only them playing but their faces as well but not doing that straight on, it looks more effective when its tilting up towards them. They also use crane shots, by showing all the band also but with the whole setting fitted in too.

Editing

In this music video they use a lot of fast straight cuts, this fits in with what genre it is, as its rock, if the cuts were slow, it doesn't really match and as the music is quite up beat, the cuts are fitted in with that. It also uses a lot of jump cuts, which jumps from the artists/ band playing and singing to the story what's actually happening in the music video, in this video that is exactly what happens and its frequently used in the majority of music videos. Computer generated images are also an editing technique they use, as it shows the woman walking through a crowd yet they get sped up as if you cant actually make out their people, this shows how lonely she feels, but the people aren't actually walking that fast so it is computer generated.

Sound

This music video uses audio dubbing, this is where they video and all of the cuts and other edits are all put together already and then they just put the audio to the song, so it looks like they are singing it but they are actually lip syncing. In this music video, the sound is just the music and the vocals, it doesn't have any other non-diegetic sounds as the song starts straight away.

Lighting

In this music video they artificial lighting which is commonly used in most music videos, this is where the light shines specifically onto the artists face so we can see his face coming across as ageless, it makes them look good and this is what most people want to see, what the band now looks like as they get older. This is a very big effect in a rock music video because the surrounding is mostly dark and seeing their faces is important. In a rock music video you don't ever seem to spot any special effects and there isn't in this one either.

 Props

The props used in this video, are mainly the instruments the band is using to play the music and the microphone that the main singer is using. These props always being shown as the band are always being shown throughout so we always see these props. Props are essential in music videos because without them it would be very plain and if there aren't any props then that means the characters cant be doing much which may put people of watching them.

Costumes

The costumes they wear in this video are just normal everyday clothes, they are pretty dull just like rock clothes, the whole video doesn't have any colour, its all dark and the ain colours you see are black and grey.

Mise en scene
The mise en scene in Numb by Linkin Park is a song trying to explain that adults have forgotten what its like to be a kid now they have grown up and that their children cant just be what they want them to be, they are trying to say that its hard to do something that someone else wants you to if you don't want to do. So the song is explaining this and the video helps alongside it, showing a girl trying to be what her parents what but she cant and its driving her crazy.

Analysis of a music video; Kodaline // High Hopes

Kodaline // High Hopes

Conventions

In this music video, Kodaline aren't featured in the video, as the music video is actually a story and the song is what makes the video make sense. So the song doesn't apply to the band itself. The song and what's happening in the music video is a serious story and so the camera cuts are quite a lot through out the video. By not showing the band i think this helped get the message about the video out more as people concentrated on that more because they didn't see the band at all.

Representation

As the band aren't shown themselves in the video, this music video shows a different type of representation. the representation is shown by the characters within the music video. Such as the man and woman aren't very rich and you can tell this by how they dress and where he lives, this is because he is run down, sad and old. The woman also wears the man clothes as she has runaway from the man she was previously with which is shown at the very start of the video.

Audience

The audience of this music video can be a wide age range because the story is very heartfelt. it is mainly watched by girls because the majority of boys may think its a girly song with a girly storyline and may not be enticed to watch it. Plus the band Kodaline have a reputation of doing love music videos with the cute songs so boys know that their new ones may not be any different. These people may like other indie bands such as Foster the People and Two Door Cinema Club and they probably go on YouTube to watch a lot of these videos.

Institution

RCA Records is Kodaline record label. The purpose of this music video was to show how passionate Kodaline are with their music videos, they don't just put all of the effort into their songs they also do with their music videos. They like to show everyone that they are famous for their very touching videos. Lately they have been releasing a lot of their videos because they have just released their album, so by bringing out a lot of their songs it lets people see what kind of songs they do, then it allows people to decide if they want to buy their album or not.
